New research is showing links between
stress levels and immune response. Earlier research has correlated positive coping with
stress and better health outcomes. We now know that there is a mind-body connection that
either facilitates healing or hinders healing. Our goal is to help you make the changes in
your life that will facilitate health and improve your quality of life.
I Have a Medical Condition,
So Why Does My Doctor Want Me to See a Psychologist?
Treatment for mental disorders is not usually the issue
when a doctor refers a patient to a medical psychologist.
Intensive medical treatment invariable disrupts the lives of patients; and many medical
problems and procedures are so far outside the range of normal human experience that
almost anyone in a similar situation could be expected to experience stress.
A medical psychologist is familiar with the most common stresses medical patients have to
deal with. Some examples are:
- Need for information
- Learning how to differentiate symptoms requiring
urgent attention from those that come with the territory
- Feelings of having no control in the situation
- Feelings of frustration, fear, anger or loss
- Need for supportive relationships
- Concern about returning to work
- Concern about time involved in medical care and its
effects on ones normal routine
- Concern about the unknown and ones future

What You Can Expect
In the counseling room, you will be treated with respect. Your experience with your
medical condition is understood as a whole person event. It is expected that
there will be some emotional or psychological effects even if these effects are not major.
There will also be effects on family, friends and other close relationships.
The emphasis is on finding strengths for coping and decision-making rather than on
weaknesses or mental disorder.
You will be an equal partner in the counseling process. Your concerns are the
counselors concerns, and both set goals and work toward them together.
Your confidentiality is completely respected. Permission may be requested to confer with
your medical providers and work as a team in treating the whole person, but it
is you who decides.
Your personal values and religious beliefs are respected. Spiritual issues are very
important to coping and recovery in medical situations.
Your specific needs will be addressed as time- and cost-efficiently as possible.
